Famous Bodybuilders FFMI Score List – Are They Natural?
Every serious gym goer has asked this at least once in their life “Is he actually natural?” I know I have. You see someone with 22-inch arms, paper thin skin, and a waist the size of your thigh and something in your gut says that’s not just chicken, rice, and hard work. That’s exactly where FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) becomes your best tool. A 1995 study by Kouri et al., published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, found that natural lifters almost never exceed an FFMI of 25, while confirmed steroid users regularly blow past that mark. Today, we break down the famous bodybuilders FFMI list with verified numbers and give you an honest answer, natural or not?
What Is FFMI – And Why Should You Care?
FFMI stands for Fat-Free Mass Index. Think of it as BMI’s smarter cousin as it strips away body fat and measures only lean muscle relative to height.
Simple formula:
- FFMI = Lean Body Mass (kg) ÷ Height (m²)
What the numbers actually mean
- 18–20 -> Average gym goer
- 21–22 -> Dedicated natural lifter
- 23–24 -> Strong genetics, possibly natural
- 25 -> Near the natural ceiling (Kouri 1995)
- 26–28 -> Extremely rare naturally and raises serious questions
- 30+ -> Virtually impossible without PEDs
I have tracked my own FFMI for years. Getting to a lean 22 took consistent training for a long time. These numbers are more real than people think.

Natural ceiling — FFMI 25
1. Ronnie Coleman FFMI -> ~35.98
Natural? No.
This is the highest verified FFMI on the famous bodybuilders FFMI list. At his 1998-2003 Olympia peak, Ronnie competed at around 292 lbs with roughly 4% body fat at 5’11”. The math lands at 35.98 a number that sits nearly 11 points above the natural ceiling. On Joe Rogan’s podcast, Ronnie said he didn’t start using PEDs until around age 30. His early career physique supports that. But his Olympia era FFMI? That’s a different story entirely.
2. Phil Heath FFMI -> ~34.54
Natural? No.
Phil competed at 5’9″, around 240 lbs at roughly 4% body fat. His famous bodybuilders FFMI sits at 34.54 verified from the same Kouri study dataset. The IFBB Pro League runs zero drug testing. Phil never competed in a tested federation. The number tells you everything you need to know.
3. Dorian Yates FFMI -> 34.21
Natural? No.
The “Shadow” competed at 5’10”, roughly 257 lbs at sub 4% body fat in his prime. His FFMI comes out at 34.21. Dorian has been openly honest about his PED use during his competitive years, which actually makes him one of the more credible voices in this conversation. His brutal training philosophy was real but so was the chemical assistance.
4. Arnold Schwarzenegger FFMI ~28.7
Natural? No and he’s admitted it.
At 6’2″ and around 235 lbs competition weight, Arnold’s famous bodybuilders FFMI lands at approximately 28.7. He has publicly confirmed steroid use during his competitive era. What’s interesting is that even with PEDs, his FFMI is significantly lower than Coleman, Heath, or Yates. That tells you just how exceptional his genetics were, enhanced or not.
5. Steve Reeves FFMI 23 (1947 data)
Natural? Almost certainly yes.
Here’s where it gets important. The Kouri study estimated Steve Reeves’ FFMI at 23 based on his 1947 Mr. America contest data. Some sources push this number higher up to 25–26 using his later Mr. Universe peak stats (around 216 lbs at 6’1″). The gap comes down to which body fat estimate you use. Either way, Steve competed before anabolic steroids were widely available to athletes. He is the gold standard for what elite natural physiques looked like and even his most generous FFMI sits right at or just above the natural ceiling.
6. Kali Muscle FFMI ~35
Natural? No because of video proof.
Kali has repeatedly claimed natural status. His FFMI at his peak sits at approximately 35, based on his documented stats. There is video footage of him casually referencing his supplement stack. The fitness community has largely stopped debating this one. His FFMI alone would settle it.
7. Jeff Nippard FFMI ~24
Natural? Yes.
Jeff had his body composition professionally measured – 75 kg at 14% body fat, 5’5″ tall. That puts his famous bodybuilders FFMI at just under 24. He competes in the WNBF, which uses polygraph testing and drug panels. Both his parents competed in bodybuilding, giving him genuinely elite genetics. An FFMI of 24 sounds modest until you realize most dedicated lifters never get there.

Elite Bodybuilders
Natural ceiling — FFMI 25
CBum FFMI ~29.2
Chris Bumstead is probably the most popular bodybuilder alive right now. He won the Classic Physique Mr. Olympia six times in a row from 2019 to 2024 before retiring. He is 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs around 230 pounds. His FFMI comes out to around 29.2 which is way above the natural limit of 25.
CBum himself talked about his testosterone cycle openly on YouTube which pretty much ended the natural debate. What makes him interesting is that even with drug use his physique looks clean and aesthetic compared to the mass monsters in the Open division.
A lot of people forget he is actually enhanced because he does not look like the typical bloated Open division bodybuilder. His genetics are genuinely elite but his FFMI tells you the truth.
Nick Walker FFMI ~34 to 36
Nick Walker is famous for his nickname “The Mutant” and honestly that name fits perfectly. He is only 5 feet 7 inches tall but he walks on stage at around 250 pounds which is absolutely insane for his height.
That short height combined with that much muscle mass pushes his FFMI into the 34 to 36 range depending on which body fat estimate you use.
He won the Arnold Classic in 2021 on his very first try which shocked the entire bodybuilding world. Nick competes in the IFBB Open division which has zero drug testing so nobody is pretending here.
His physique is all about raw size and that thick dense muscle that shorter bodybuilders tend to carry much better than taller ones.
Samson Dauda FFMI ~30 to 32
Samson Dauda is the 2024 Mr. Olympia champion, originally from Nigeria and based in the UK. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall which is actually quite tall for a Mr. Olympia winner. His stage weight is around 275 pounds and his FFMI lands somewhere between 30 and 32 depending on body fat estimates.
What makes Samson different from most Open division champions is that he actually looks proportional and balanced instead of just massive. He started bodybuilding after watching Phil Heath win the 2013 Olympia and went from complete beginner to world champion in about ten years.
His wife coaches him which is a very unusual situation at this level but clearly it is working.
Derek Lunsford FFMI ~31 to 33
Derek Lunsford is one of the most impressive athletes in bodybuilding history because he won Mr. Olympia in two completely different weight divisions. He first won the 212 Olympia in 2021 then jumped to Open and won in 2023 and again in 2025. He is only 5 feet 6 inches tall and his stage weight is around 215 pounds and his FFMI lands between 31 and 33.
What people find remarkable about Derek is that he looks bigger than his actual weight suggests because of how dense and conditioned his muscles are.
Derek Lunsford is living proof that height does not matter in bodybuilding if your proportions and conditioning are truly elite. He is my personal favorite, as I am also 5’6.
Ramon Dino FFMI ~27 to 28.5
Ramon Dino is the 2025 Classic Physique Mr. Olympia champion from Brazil and one of the most naturally aesthetic looking competitors in the sport today. His category has a weight limit of 227 pounds and he comes in right at that limit with incredible muscle fullness and detail. His FFMI sits between 27 and 28.5.
A lot of people in the bodybuilding community believe Ramon has one of the best physiques ever built in Classic Physique because of his long muscle bellies and round muscle shape.
He barely speaks English which makes him a bit mysterious to international fans but his physique does all the talking on stage
Simeon Panda FFMI ~27 to 28
Simeon Panda is one of the most famous fitness influencers in the world with millions of followers across every platform. He stands 6 feet 1 inch tall at around 225 pounds which puts his FFMI between 27 and 28. The reason he is so controversial is that he has always claimed to be completely natural despite sitting well above the natural ceiling of 25.
His muscle density combined with strength numbers like squatting over 600 pounds does not really match what research says is achievable naturally.
To be fair his FFMI is not as extreme as Open division competitors but the combination of his size his leanness and his strength makes most experts very skeptical of his natural claims.

3 Signs That Make the FFMI List Even Clearer
1. Traps don’t lie The trapezius muscles have a high density of androgen receptors. Comic book level traps that overshadow the neck almost always point to PED use, even when the FFMI looks borderline.
2. Rate of gains matters more than the final number. Natural lifters grow slowly. If someone packed 30 lbs of lean mass in a single off-season, the FFMI jump will tell that story clearly.
3. FFMI is a strong signal. Bone structure, water retention, and body fat measurement errors can shift the number. Always combine FFMI with drug test history and physical signs for the full picture.
What the Kouri 1995 Study Actually Found
This research remains the most cited study on natural muscle limits. It tested 83 steroid users and 74 non users
- Average FFMI of steroid users: ~25
- Average FFMI of non-users: ~22
- Highest recorded natural FFMI in the study: 25
- Highest steroid user FFMI recorded: 32
Pre-steroid era Mr. America winners (1939-1959) averaged a mean FFMI of 25.4 – which is why Steve Reeves at 23 is actually on the lower end of that group. John Grimek hit 26.9 in 1941. George Eiferman reached 27.7 in 1948. These are your real natural ceilings rare, genetic outliers, not expectations.
Disclaimer: Exact body fat % is never officially measured at competitions. FFMI scores are calculated using estimated body fat ranges of 4–10%, which is why different sources may show slightly different numbers.
FAQ
Q: What FFMI is considered natural?
The Kouri study puts the natural ceiling at 25. Lifters between 23–25 may be natural with exceptional genetics. Above 25 doesn’t confirm steroid use but makes it suspicious.
Q: Is Steve Reeves’ FFMI really just 23?
Based on his 1947 Mr. America data used in the Kouri study so yes its 23. Some sources estimate higher (up to 26) using his later peak stats. The controversy is real, but even the higher estimate barely touches the natural ceiling.
Q: Was Ronnie Coleman ever natural?
He claims he was natural until around age 30. His early physique is consistent with that. His peak Olympia FFMI of 35.98 was not natural by any measure.
Q: Can FFMI be inaccurate?
Yes. If body fat is underestimated, FFMI looks artificially inflated. Accurate body composition testing is critical for a reliable number.
Q: Is an FFMI of 26 possible naturally?
Rarely, but yes. Historical data shows a small number of pre-steroid era competitors reached 26–27. It requires exceptional genetics and decades of consistent training.
Q: What’s the best way to use the FFMI list?
Use it as a reference point alongside drug test history, rate of muscle gain, and physical indicators like trap development. No single number tells the whole story.
What is Jeff Nippard’s FFMI?
Based on his DEXA scan verified stats of 5’5″, 165 lbs, and 14% body fat, Jeff Nippard’s estimated FFMI is approximately 24.0. This is one of the highest documented scores among self-proclaimed natural coaches and places him right at the upper boundary of what most research considers achievable naturally.
What is Ronnie Coleman’s FFMI?
Ronnie Coleman’s estimated FFMI at his 2003 peak is approximately 35.9 based on his verified stage weight of 292 lbs at 5’11” and approximately 3-4% body fat. This is the highest estimated FFMI ever recorded among Mr. Olympia champions.
What is the highest FFMI ever recorded?
There is no officially verified world record for the highest FFMI ever recorded. The highest reported FFMI values are generally above 30 among elite bodybuilders and strength athletes. Ronnie Coleman’s estimated FFMI is around 35.9 at his competitive peak, but this is a calculated estimate based on his reported height, weight, and estimated body fat percentage rather than an officially measured result.
