I was one of those people. I trained for almost 3 years. I went to the gym almost every day, ate clean, slept on time. That is extremely rare for a natural lifter almost impossible without steroids.

FFMI gained popularity from scientific studies that compared natural bodybuilders with enhanced athletes. Also, researchers observed that the most natural bodybuilders rarely exceeded an FFMI of 25, while higher values were more common among those using performance enhancing drugs.
Recent research has provided more detailed reference values for FFMI across different age groups. A 2026 nationally representative study of more than 10,000 Korean adults found that FFMI in men peaked around ages 30-49 before gradually declining at older ages (Kim et al., 2026). The researchers used bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to establish nationally representative FFMI and fat mass index reference values for Korean adults.
This highlights an important point. FFMI changes with age, so tracking your own trend over time can be more useful than focusing on a single fixed benchmark.
In the end, the result is that the FFMI became a practical benchmark for estimating natural genetic muscle potential, although individual results vary due to genetics, training, and nutrition. Now, most people use this genetic potential calculator.
Does High FFMI Always Mean Steroids?
No having an FFMI above 25 does not actually prove that someone is taking steroids yes, It can give a strong hint. But calling it proof is totally wrong. A lot of people on the internet treat 25 FFMI like it’s some kind of lie detector test but that’s not true at all. The original 1995 study by Kouri looked at 157 male athletes. Out of them, 74 were natural lifters and 83 were using steroids. In that group none of the natural lifters had an FFMI above 25, which sounds pretty convincing at first.
But here’s the part most people miss. In the same study, almost half of the steroid users also had an FFMI below 25. So having a low FFMI doesn’t automatically prove someone is natural either.
Even the study itself didn’t present 25 as a final judgment. The researchers described their findings as “preliminary” and suggested the number 25 only as a starting point or a screening guideline not a final verdict about whether someone is natural or not. Simply having an FFMI above 25 doesn’t mean someone is using steroids and having an FFMI below 25 doesn’t automatically make someone natural.

FFMI vs Normalized FFMI. What Is the Difference?
FFMI Fat-Free Mass Index measures how much lean muscle you carry relative to your height. The formula is simple
Fat-Free Mass = Body Weight (kg) × (1 − Body Fat % ÷ 100)
FFMI = Fat-Free Mass (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
So if you weigh 80 kg, have 15% body fat, and you are 1.75m tall
- Fat-Free Mass = 80 × 0.85 = 68 kg
- FFMI = 68 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.2
Simple. But here is the problem taller people naturally have more lean mass just because of their larger body structure. A 6’4″ guy will almost always score higher than a 5’6″ guy even if they are equally muscular. That is where normalized FFMI comes in.
What Is Normalized FFMI?
Normalized FFMI adjusts your raw score to a standard reference height of 1.8m (5’11”). This is the average height of the men in the original 1995 Kouri study. The formula adds a small correction on top of your FFMI
Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.3 × (1.8 − Height in meters). Using the same example 80 kg, 15% body fat, 1.75m tall
- FFMI = 22.2
- Normalized FFMI = 22.2 + 6.3 × (1.8 − 1.75) = 22.2 + 0.315 = 22.5
If you are shorter than 1.8m normalized FFMI goes up. If you are taller than 1.8m, it goes down. At exactly 1.8m both numbers are identical.
The big thing most people miss when research says the natural limit is 25, that is always the normalized number. So always use normalized FFMI when comparing yourself to others or to research data. Use raw FFMI only to track your own progress over time.
